The pineapple (Ananas comosus or Ananas sativus) is a plant species from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae). It is originally native to America and is now cultivated as a fruit plant in tropical regions around the world.
The pineapple was already cultivated in pre-Columbian times and spread across large parts of South America and as far north as Mexico.
The pineapple fruit is rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C) and minerals as well as enzymes (including bromelain or bromelin, invertase).
