Vitamin C is an important water-soluble antioxidant and necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system and, for example, for bone health . However, as pure ascorbic acid, it is not well tolerated by everyone and can have adverse effects on tooth enamel or the stomach environment. Therefore, the vitamin is combined with minerals to "buffer" the acid.
