The distribution area of Inonotus obliquus extends primarily across the forested regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It prefers damp areas (along swamps, ditches, lakes, and streams) with large stands of birch trees, but also sunlit forest edges. The largest populations are found in Scandinavia, Siberia, Japan, and Canada. Populations are also known in the larger forests of Eastern Europe and Russia. Efforts to cultivate the mushroom in an artificial environment have so far been rather unsuccessful, as the human-cultivated version does not contain the full range of its active ingredients. Chaga has been used as a medicinal remedy in Siberia and Ukraine for several centuries.
While the mushroom was traditionally processed into a fine powder and then steeped in hot water, today, naturopathic practitioners primarily offer chaga extract, which has a high concentration of bioactive components.
