  • The medicine is a powder containing sodium picosulfate, a laxative that stimulates the gut. It also contains magnesium citrate, another laxative that induces thorough bowel evacuation and cleansing by retaining fluid in the bowel.
  • If necessary, the medicine is used in adults, adolescents and children from 1 year of age to clean the intestines before an X-ray examination, a colonoscopy or a surgical procedure.

  • Always take the medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor if you are not sure.
  • Adults (including elderly patients) and children over 9 years of age:
    • The recommended dose is:
      • Take the dissolved contents of the first sachet 10 to 18 hours before your examination or procedure.
      • Take the dissolved contents of the second sachet 4 to 6 hours before your examination or procedure.
    • After taking the dissolved contents of the first sachet, drink at least 5 times 250 ml of a clear liquid spread over several hours.
    • After taking the dissolved contents of the second sachet, drink at least 3 times 250 ml of a clear liquid spread over several hours.
    • You can drink clear liquids up to two hours before your examination or procedure.
  • Children (under 9 years):
    • The times of administration for children are the same as for adults.
    • The medicine comes with a measuring spoon.
    • From 1 and under 2 years: first dose: 1 measuring spoon; second intake: 1 measuring spoon
    • From 2 and under 4 years: 2 scoops in the morning, 2 scoops in the afternoon
    • From 4 and under 9 years: first dose: dissolved content of a sachet (taken as described under "Adults"); second dose: 2 measuring spoons
    • 9 years and older: adult dosage
  • The success of the examination depends on how thoroughly your bowel is emptied. The test may need to be repeated if the bowel is not adequately cleansed. Always follow your doctor's dietary advice.

 

  • If you take more than you should
    • If you take more than you should, contact your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital.

 

  • If you forget to take a dose
    • Please ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

  • Dissolve the powder in a cup of cold water (approx. 150 ml). Stir the solution for 2 - 3 minutes and then drink it. If the solution gets hot, allow it to cool before drinking.
  • Adults (including elderly patients) and children over 9 years of age:
    • Take the dissolved contents of the first sachet 10 to 18 hours before your examination or procedure.
    • Take the dissolved contents of the second sachet 4 to 6 hours before your examination or procedure.
    • After taking the dissolved contents of the first sachet, drink at least 5 times 250 ml of a clear liquid spread over several hours.

  • Dosing with the measuring spoon:
    • Remove a heaping scoop of powder from the sachet.
    • Drag the back of a knife across the surface of the measuring spoon.
    • The amount of powder remaining in the measuring spoon corresponds to the dosage "1 measuring spoon" (4 g powder).
    • Pour the powder from the measuring scoop into a drinking vessel with water. The drinking vessel should contain:
      • approximately 50ml of water when measuring 1 scoop of powder.
      • approximately 100ml of water when 2 scoops of powder are measured out.
    • Stir for 2-3 minutes.
    • Drink the solution. Sometimes the solution becomes warm as the medicine dissolves. If this happens, allow them to cool sufficiently before drinking.
    • Dispose of leftovers with the bag.
  • You must expect frequent, runny stools at any time after ingestion. You should be able to use a restroom at any time while the effects last.
  • To compensate for the body's loss of fluids, please drink plenty of clear fluids during treatment with the drug as long as the laxative effect lasts. In general, you should drink clear liquids when you are thirsty.
  • Clear liquids include fruit juices without pulp, soft drinks, clear soups, tea, coffee (no milk, soy, or cream), and water. Don't drink just water.
  • The success of the examination depends on how thoroughly your bowel is emptied. The test may need to be repeated if the bowel is not adequately cleansed. Always follow your doctor's dietary advice.

side effects

  • Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
  • There have been isolated reports of severe, long-lasting abdominal pain, which may indicate a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention, and isolated reports of severe allergic reactions that can cause difficulty breathing.
  • Isolated cases of mild ulcers in the small intestine have also been reported.
  • In the event of an allergic reaction or severe, long-lasting abdominal pain, please contact your doctor or the nearest emergency room immediately.
  • The known side effects are described below:
    • Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
      • headache
      • nausea
      • Anal pain (proctalgia)
    • Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):
      • rash and/or itching,
      • Vomiting and severe diarrhea with insufficient fluid and salt intake can lead to dehydration with headaches and confusion
      • stomach pain
      • Vomit
      • Low levels of sodium or potassium in the blood (hyponatraemia or hypokalemia) with or without seizures. Seizures have occasionally been reported in epileptics.
  • Other side effects whose frequency is not known:
    • Very frequent, loose stools or diarrhea may be the primary clinical effect. If you experience uncomfortable bowel movements or are concerned about them, you should contact your doctor.
  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

  • Taking with other medicines
    • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
    • It is especially important to tell your doctor if you
      • Swelling agent-containing laxatives such. B. Take bran
      • take medicines regularly, as their effects may be altered, e.g. B. with contraceptives, antibiotics, antidiabetics, iron, penicillamine or antiepileptics. These medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before and at least 6 hours after taking this preparation.
      • are taking medicines that can affect the water and/or mineral balance (electrolyte balance), e.g. B. diuretics (water pills), steroids, lithium, digoxin, antidepressants, carbamazepine or neuroleptics.

Contraindications

  • The medicine should not be taken if
    • you are allergic to sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, citric acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
    • You suffer from insufficient gastric emptying (gastric retention).
    • You suffer from an ulcer in your stomach or intestines
    • you have severe kidney disease
    • You suffer from a perforated bowel or a bowel obstruction
    • You are currently feeling or are ill
    • you need abdominal surgery if you have e.g. B. have acute appendicitis
    • You have been told by your doctor that you have heart failure (the heart is unable to pump blood around the body sufficiently)
    • you have active inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
    • Your doctor has told you that you have too much magnesium in your blood
    • You are very thirsty or may be severely dehydrated
    • Your doctor has told you that you are suffering from muscle damage and that parts of the muscle are leaking into the blood
    • you have any of the following conditions:
      • Intestinal obstruction or failure to have a normal bowel movement (ileus)
      • damage to the intestinal wall (toxic colitis)
      • Enlargement of the large intestine (toxic megacolon)
  • In these diseases, the movement of the intestinal contents can be impaired or prevented. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, tenderness or swelling, colicky pain, and fever.

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.

  • Warnings and Precautions
    • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if
      • you have recently had abdominal surgery
      • You have impaired heart or kidney function
      • You have an inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
      • You are under the age of 18, if you are older or if you are physically weak. Make sure you drink enough liquid and minerals (electrolytes) during the treatment.
      • you take the preparation before bowel surgery.
    • If your exam is in the early morning, you may need to take the contents of the second sachet during the night, which may result in sleep disturbances.

 

  • Ability to drive and use machines
    • The medicine has no effect on the ability to drive and use machines. However, you should be able to use a toilet at any time after each dose while the effects last.
