Vitamin D – the special vitamin, DEBORA 5,600 IU vitamin D3, vitamin D deficiency
Vitamins are vital nutritional components that the body does not primarily need to generate energy, but rather for other vital functions. However, the body cannot produce vitamins itself. An exception is the fat-soluble vitamin D: With the help of sunlight, the vitamin can be formed through the skin. A balanced level is important for health. Because vitamin D – also known as cholecalciferol – contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function. In addition, an adequate supply of vitamin D should be beneficial for the cardiovascular system and protect against cancer.

There are many causes of vitamin D deficiency
The body can produce the fat-soluble vitamin D itself through sun exposure of the skin and store it in its muscle and fat tissue. Nevertheless, deficiency symptoms occur in phases. Sun exposure between October and March is not sufficient for the body's own vitamin D production. Although vitamin D can also be ingested through food, the proportion is small in relation to the body's own production. In addition, foods rich in vitamin D are less common in our modern diet. Cod liver oil and fatty fish such as herring and mackerel are good sources of vitamin D. Dairy products and egg yolk also contain vitamin D. However, the content in milk depends on the season and is richer in summer.
Even with a lifestyle that allows little sun exposure of the skin, there can be a risk of vitamin D deficiency. This applies in particular to residents of old people's and nursing homes. In addition, many people apply sunscreen when they go out in the sun. However, this has the consequence that vitamin D formation in the skin is reduced.
If the self-synthesis in the skin or the supply via the diet cannot be guaranteed to a sufficient extent, a vitamin D deficiency can develop.
Supplementation of the vitamin D supply
The German Society for Nutrition (DGE) recommends a daily vitamin D intake of 20 µg/day for healthy adults - this corresponds to 800 international units (IE) per day - if sufficient endogenous production is not ensured. Taking one Debora ® capsule per week provides 5600 IU of vitamin D3, the same total amount that you would get if you took 800 IU or 20 µg of vitamin D3 daily for a week.
