ELMEX SENSITIVE PROFESSIONAL Repair & Prevent

How does pain sensitivity occur?
The most common cause of pain-sensitive teeth is receding gums. The underlying canals on the neck of the tooth are exposed, meaning that natural protection against irritation is no longer guaranteed. Hot, cold, sweet, sour or touch can reach the tooth nerve directly and cause pain.

Another common cause of sensitive teeth is tooth enamel loss. The visible part of your tooth that extends above the gum line is called the crown and is covered with a layer of enamel. Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and protects the softer dentin, pulp and nerves of the teeth.

When your sensitive tooth is exposed to a trigger like a cold drink, the stimulus travels through the dentinal tubules to your nerve. The nerve sends a signal to your brain and you perceive it as a painful feeling.

What What is special about elmex ® SENSITIVE PROFESSIONAL REPAIR & PREVENT toothpaste?
According to the dental clinic at the University Hospital of Cologne, one in four patients complains about sensitive teeth. If you are also affected, you may have thought about using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

The toothpaste's ProArgin ® formula instantly* repairs sensitive tooth areas and zinc helps strengthen gums to prevent future pain sensitivity. When your sensitive tooth is exposed to a trigger like a cold drink, the stimulus travels through the dentinal tubules to your nerve. The nerve sends a signal to your brain and you perceive it as a painful feeling. The toothpaste blocks the dentin tubules so that pain triggers cannot reach the nerve.

Fluoride for added protection While this doesn't block pain, it does strengthen tooth enamel and dentin. It also reduces the risk of developing tooth decay.

*For immediate pain relief, apply to the sensitive tooth with your fingertip up to twice a day and massage gently for 1 minute.

Application:
For immediate pain relief, apply to the sensitive tooth with your fingertip up to twice a day and massage gently for 1 minute.

For children under 12 years:
Do not use fingertip application for immediate pain relief. For lasting pain relief, apply to a soft toothbrush and brush teeth twice daily. Be sure to reach all pain-sensitive areas.

For children up to 6 years:
Only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. To avoid excessive ingestion, brush your teeth only under supervision. Close tube after use.

COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
How does toothpaste help with sensitive teeth?

When your sensitive tooth is exposed to a trigger like a cold drink, the stimulus travels through the dentinal tubules to your nerve. The nerve sends a signal to your brain and you perceive it as a painful feeling. There are two types of toothpaste for sensitive teeth. The first type blocks the dentinal tubules so that pain triggers cannot reach the nerve and the second numbs the nerve itself to prevent it from sending pain signals to the brain.

What else can I do about sensitive teeth? What helps with toothache due to sensitive tooth necks? Your best defense against this is thorough oral hygiene. Brush your teeth, including your gums and tongue, twice daily with gentle brushing movements, and use dental floss and mouthwash.

Sensitive teeth always mean that the dentin is exposed. Because dentin is more susceptible to tooth decay and erosion, good oral health is especially important.

To protect your tooth enamel, try to limit sugar and carbonated, sugary and/or acidic drinks. You can also:
  • Chew sugar-free gum after eating to stimulate the production of acid-neutralizing saliva.
  • Rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouthwash after meals. Reduce snacking between meals.
  • Limit sugary foods to your main meals.
  • Use elmex ® gelée once a week. The weekly intensive treatment with highly concentrated amine fluoride not only demonstrably reduces the risk of tooth decay, but also strengthens tooth enamel and treats hypersensitive tooth necks.
