you have decided to purchase an Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator. This is a child-friendly medical device for nasal irrigation. Please read the following instructions for use carefully, as they contain important information about what you should consider when using the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator. Please keep these instructions for future reference. You may want to read them again later. If you have any questions, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.
What is the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator and what is it used for?
The Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator is a child-friendly medical device for cleaning and moisturizing the nasal cavity. The Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator is adapted to children's ergonomics and allows children between 3 and 12 years of age to independently irrigate their nose under adult supervision.
When should the nose not be irrigated?
Nasal irrigation should not be performed on children:
o if injuries to the roof of the nose and sinus walls create a direct connection to the fluid spaces of the brain;
o if they are prone to frequent and severe nosebleeds;
o if persistent aspiration (inhaling the irrigation solution) with coughing fits and shortness of breath occurs due to a lack of coordination during nasal irrigation, irrigation treatments should only be continued when the child's motor skills allow it.
What should you generally consider before using the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator?
Adults and children preparing the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator for nasal irrigation should wash their hands thoroughly before each use and rinse the nasal irrigator with warm water to prevent the spread of germs.
How do you fill the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator?
Please assist your child in using the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator correctly. To fill, firmly click the reservoir into the base. Then, position the nasal applicator integrated into the base horizontally forward. This closes the valve. Now, unscrew and remove the cap. Next, fill the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator with warm water up to the "max" mark and add a suitable amount of salt, preferably one 1.475 g sachet of Emser Salt. Note: The water used to prepare the rinsing solution must not exceed 50°C, must be of at least drinking water quality, and should always be fresh. Never use stagnant water or store leftover rinsing solution, as this can lead to bacterial growth. For particularly vulnerable patients, such as children with cystic fibrosis or children who have recently undergone surgery during the first three days after an operation, the use of sterile or boiled water may be necessary. After filling, replace the screw cap and tighten it. Now close the small hole in the cap with your finger. Then swirl the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator until the salt has completely dissolved. Note: If the child is performing this step themselves, please check that the salt has completely dissolved before starting the nasal rinse.
How does your child correctly rinse their nose with the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator?
Take the filled Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator in one hand and close the small hole in the screw cap with your index finger. Then, tilt the nasal nozzle all the way up. Now, lean your head slightly over a sink and open your mouth wide so that the soft palate rises. This prevents the rinsing solution from flowing down the back of the throat. In this position, gently place the nasal nozzle against one nostril to close it. Note: Please ensure that your child does not try to push the nasal nozzle into the nostril and accidentally press the rinsing opening against the nasal wall, as this will prevent the rinsing solution from flowing into the nose. Now, open the small hole in the screw cap by lifting your index finger. This will automatically direct the rinsing solution into one nostril, around the nasal septum, and out of the other nostril. To rinse the upper parts of the nasal cavity, gently squeeze the walls of the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator in the center of the reservoir. The irrigation pressure is now slightly increased, and the rinsing solution is flowing through the upper part of the nasal cavity. Repeat this process several times, placing the nasal irrigator against the other nostril as well. Important: If your child wants to blow their nose a little immediately after rinsing, make sure they only close one nostril at a time. This is the only way to prevent the pressure in the nasal cavity from increasing. Unwanted pressure increases can cause the solution and mucus to be forced into the passages connecting the nose to the ears or sinuses. Usually, the fluid drains back on its own very quickly. In rare cases, decongestant nasal drops may be helpful.
What should you do if the rinsing solution doesn't flow into the nose?
If the rinsing nozzle is pressed too hard against one nostril, the solution cannot flow into the nose. In this case, please first check the position of the nasal irrigator and adjust it.
What should you do if one nostril is completely blocked?
If one nostril is almost completely blocked, the rinsing solution may not be able to flow into or out of that nostril. In these cases, you should first try starting the rinsing treatment on the other side of your nose, as the blockage can usually be cleared by rinsing the opposite side. If this is not enough, the rinsing pressure can be increased by gently squeezing the nasal irrigator to help clear the blockage. Never increase the rinsing pressure too much with excessive force!
What should you do if small amounts of the rinsing solution run down your throat?
Small amounts of nasal irrigation fluid can always enter the throat despite optimal use. These can then simply be spat out or swallowed.
What should I do if my child chokes and the irrigation fluid gets into their lungs?
Some children tend not to open their mouths wide enough. In this case, larger amounts of irrigation fluid can enter the throat, and the child may choke. They will start coughing and have difficulty breathing. Stop the irrigation until the child has calmed down and then restart it after explaining the procedure to the child again. No other countermeasures are necessary.
Please note:
Motor skills can vary greatly from child to child. Most children can easily perform a nasal irrigation independently under adult supervision. However, if choking and aspiration occur regularly, irrigations should only be continued when the child is able to understand and learn the irrigation technique.
What should I do if irrigation fluid continues to run from the nose long after the treatment?
Children whose noses are still dripping with rinsing solution some time after use should have their heads turned several times over the sink in all directions after each use to ensure all the solution drains out.
How do you clean the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator?
The Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator should be rinsed briefly with warm water before and after each use. To do this, extend the nasal nozzle as far as it will go and unscrew the cap. The reservoir can then be rinsed briefly under running water. Afterwards, fold the nasal nozzle back and leave the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator upright to dry completely. Important: Do not close the reservoir with the screw cap during the drying phase. Please note that insufficient cleaning or drying can lead to bacterial growth in the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator, which could cause or worsen illnesses. For thorough cleaning, the reservoir and nasal nozzle can be detached from the base of the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator. The reservoir can be easily pulled upwards from the base. The nasal nozzle, however, is relatively tight, so this process requires some force. To remove it, turn the nasal nozzle downwards and pull it out of its socket. When disassembled, all components of the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Please ensure that no dishwasher water collects in the individual components when placing them in the dishwasher. Alternatively, the components can be rinsed with boiling water, boiled in a pot of water, or sterilized using standard methods (121°C, 20 minutes in an autoclave). Note: Please assist your child if they are not yet able to perform the cleaning process themselves.
How often and for how long should nasal irrigations be performed?
Nasal irrigations with the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator should generally be performed 1 to 3 times daily with 125 ml of rinsing solution. In particularly severe cases, more frequent nasal irrigations may be beneficial. As part of long-term irrigation therapies (several months or years), treatments every 2 to 3 days have also proven effective, depending on individual constitution. Nasal irrigations with isotonic Emser saline solutions can generally be performed without any restrictions on frequency or duration.
What side effects can occur when using the Emser Nasanita children's nasal rinse?
Occasionally, mild irritation such as tingling and burning in the nose may occur. Rarely, headaches and brief nosebleeds have been observed immediately after rinsing treatments. In isolated cases, or with poor coordination, fluid may run down the throat and be swallowed or aspirated. Aspiration of the rinsing fluid leads to a coughing reflex and temporary shortness of breath. No countermeasures are necessary.
What else should be considered?
The Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator is a medical device with a limited lifespan and shelf life, so it should be replaced regularly. For hygienic reasons, we recommend a maximum of approximately 200 uses or one year. Please ensure that each child uses their own Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator for hygiene reasons. Nasal irrigation should always be performed with isotonic saline solutions, i.e., saline solutions whose concentration is adapted to the mineral content of blood. Therefore, please preferably use the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator with Emser salt in 1.475 g portion packs. These are specially formulated for the fill volume of the Emser Nasanita children's nasal irrigator (refer to the instructions for use). Please note that incorrectly concentrated rinsing solutions can lead to severe irritation of the nasal mucosa and can damage it with continued use. Please use only pharmaceutical-grade salts, as other salts may be harmful. For example, table salt often contains undeclared flow regulators that can damage the nasal mucosa.
