EMSER Salt Bags

  • The preparation is a saline topical therapeutic agent for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
  • The drug is used:
    • for supportive treatment through moisturizing, cleansing and decongesting of the nasal mucosa
    • in common acute infections of the upper respiratory tract
    • in chronic rhinosinusitis
    • and as an accompanying treatment measure to accelerate the healing process after endonasal sinus surgery.
  • If you do not feel better or even feel worse after 4 to 5 days, consult your doctor.

How does the active ingredient in this medicine work?

Emser salt helps acute and chronic rhinitis subside more quickly and promotes recovery after sinus surgery. It is a mixture of many different salts, such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. This salt mixture helps keep the nasal mucosa moist and loosen thick mucus. It also makes the tiny hairs in the olfactory organ beat faster, allowing them to transport thick phlegm and harmful pathogens more quickly.

  • The preparation must be dissolved in water before use. The medication should generally be used in an isosmotic concentration (i.e., adjusted to the mineral content of the blood). To do this, dissolve the contents of one 2.95 g sachet in 250 ml of water (or one 1.475 g sachet in 125 ml of water). Higher concentrations are only possible under the advice of a doctor. Lower concentrations should not be used.
  • The following points should be observed when preparing a ready-to-use solution:
    • The quality of the water used depends on the intended application.
      • When nebulizing with a suitable atomizing device, the use of distilled water is recommended, as otherwise the nozzles of the device could become clogged. The distilled water used should either be freshly distilled; otherwise, boiling is recommended.
      • For nasal irrigation, tap water (drinking water quality, preferably lukewarm) can generally be used. For the first 3 days after endonasal procedures, boiled tap water should be used.
  • For nasal irrigation:
    • Adults and children aged 3 and over should rinse their noses 1 to 3 times daily with 100 to 300 ml of iso-osmotic solution. For children up to 12 years old, a volume of up to 125 ml is usually sufficient. For adolescents over 12 years and adults, rinsing volumes of 250 ml or more are recommended.
  • For inhalation through the nose:
    • Nasal inhalation should be performed 3 to 4 times daily using an iso-osmotic solution of the medication. Inhalation should always be carried out using a suitable nebulizer. Compressed air or ultrasonic nebulizers with a nasal mask or nasal adapter are suitable. Depending on the device type, the volume required for nebulization can vary considerably (5 to 300 ml). In any case, the nebulizer should be filled with enough solution to ensure an inhalation time of 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Always use this medicine exactly as described or exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
