Ginkgo biloba is a tree of exceptional resilience. Thousands of years ago, it played an important role in ancient Chinese medicine.
The origins of the ginkgo tree date back 300 million years; it has existed in its current form for almost 150 million years. In this unimaginably long time, the ginkgo has survived everything that has completely changed the plant world around it several times.
The terrible dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima in World War II shows how tough he really is. 300,000 people died and the entire flora and fauna of the region was permanently disturbed. But the following spring, a completely burned ginkgo sprouted again, becoming a symbol of hope for the people.
Nowadays, it has been discovered that the ginkgo tree is ideal for planting in cities, as it can cope with the ever-growing environmental pollution like hardly any other plant. It shows the same robustness against natural pests and fungi - a ginkgo cannot be shaken by anything.
As a cultivated tree, the species survived in China and in Japanese temple gardens, a living fossil that was represented worldwide and species-rich in the Jurassic period. Primarily forked, as is otherwise only the case with simple ferns, the veins of its deciduous leaves, which turn bright yellow in autumn and have no midrib, branch out. Because of these special, fan-shaped leaves, the ginkgo tree is neither a deciduous nor a conifer.
