Hericium - the lion's mane among mushrooms
or Hericium - The rare genus of the hedgehog mushrooms
The Hericium erinaceus is also known as the monkey head mushroom, lion's mane mushroom, hedgehog's spiny beard, bulbous spiny beard, yamabusitake, houtou or pom-pom blanc. The unusual names come from its appearance. The Hericium mushrooms are therefore also called spiny beards and represent a small genus of mushrooms from the order of the brittle-leaved mushrooms, which are particularly notable for their typical appearance. The common visual feature of the Hericium mushrooms are the hanging spines, which, in terms of appearance, allow a comparison with corals. The fruiting bodies of the Hericium are either branched like corals, such as those of the branched spiny beard, or they have long hanging spines such as those of the hedgehog's spiny beard. The most common types of spiny beards in Europe are the spiny spiny beard, the fir spiny beard, the hedgehog's spiny beard and the branched spiny beard.
