Iron exists in two forms: heme iron from animal-based foods, which is absorbed more quickly, and non-heme iron from plants, which is often better tolerated and easier on the stomach. But not all plant-based iron sources are created equal!
Iron values:
- Iron (Fe3⁺) is found in plant-based foods and must first be converted into iron (Fe2⁺). Vitamin C improves this conversion and increases absorption.
- Ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) is more bioavailable and is directly utilized. It is found in animal products, but also in plant sources when protected by ferritin .
The curry leaf (Murraya koenigii) is a natural source of iron with valuable nutrients. Prized in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries, it provides iron in a particularly well-tolerated and readily absorbed form – a gentle, plant-based alternative!
Recommended intake:
