Lactrase® 18000 contains 18000 FCC units of the enzyme lactase per capsule/tablet.

In Germany, around 15% of adults have a lactase deficiency. Lactrase® is a dietetic food for special nutrition in the case of lactose intolerance (milk sugar intolerance) caused by a lack of lacatase.

What is lactase deficiency?

One speaks of a lactase deficiency when the enzyme lactase is not sufficiently available in the small intestine. Milk sugar consumed with food then reaches the large intestine in an uncleaved form, where it is fermented by intestinal bacteria with the formation of gas. In addition, lactose can cause an increased flow of water into the large intestine. This can lead to symptoms such as B. abdominal pain, flatulence, feeling of fullness, increased urge to defecate or diarrhea after consuming dairy products and is then referred to as lactose intolerance.

How does Lactrase® work?
The enzyme lactase contained in Lactrase® breaks down the milk sugar and thus takes over the function of the body's own lactase, which is lacking in the event of a lactase deficiency. Lactrase® therefore generally enables milk and milk products to be enjoyed without symptoms. This also ensures that the body is supplied with the essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins contained in milk. These include in particular protein, calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D.

Where does the lactase contained in Lactrase® come from?
The lactase enzyme contained in Lactrase® is not of animal origin. It is made using the microorganism Aspergillus oryzae, which has been used to produce food enzymes for decades.

Where is the lactase released?
After consumption, the capsule dissolves in the stomach within a few minutes and releases the lactase it contains, which is then available for splitting the lactose in the chyme. Gastric juice-resistant encapsulation of the enzyme we use is not necessary because Lactrase® contains a so-called “acidic” lactase. This has the special ability to work well in the acidic environment of the stomach.

What happens to the lactase in the digestive tract after consumption?
The enzyme lactase is a protein (protein). After it travels from the stomach to the small intestine with the chyme, it is digested there like any other dietary protein (e.g. from meat or an egg). The enzyme is therefore neither absorbed from the small intestine nor does it affect the organism and accordingly cannot influence the body's own lactase production. The effect of lactase is limited exclusively to the splitting of lactose present in the chyme. The consumption of (even large amounts of) Lactrase® is therefore harmless, and undesirable effects are not to be feared even with regular and long-term consumption.

Can Lactrase® be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding and by children?
Lactrase® is suitable for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children.
