The essential trace element manganese must be consumed through food as the body cannot synthesize it itself. On average, there are around 10-40 mg of manganese in the human organism. The highest proportion of manganese is found in bone, liver and kidney cells as well as in the mitochondria. As a cofactor of over 60 enzymes, the trace element is an important component for the functional progression of many metabolic processes. Manganese protects cells from oxidative stress through the manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase. Recommended Manganese consumption:
