Hydrastis has anticatarrhal, antiinflammatory, and antiseptic activities and is used as an astringent, bitter tonic, laxative, antidiabetic, and muscular stimulant. The astringent effect is on mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, the gastrointestinal tract, the bladder, the rectum, and the skin.
