dosage

  • Always take the preparation exactly as directed. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • The dosage depends on the level of the serum phosphate level.
  • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is:
    • 3-6 hard capsules of the preparation (900 mg - 1800 mg aluminum chloride hydroxide complex (9:8:19) 23 H2O) per day.
    • For children over the age of three, the dosage should be reduced according to body weight.
    • Plasma phosphate levels should be checked regularly to adjust the dosage.
    • The hard capsules are taken whole throughout the day with meals with sufficient liquid.

  • duration of use
    • As long as an increased serum phosphate level requires the prescription of the preparation by your doctor.
    • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of the preparation is too strong or too weak.

  • If you take more of the preparation than you should
    • Constipation can occur, which may require the use of laxatives. Please speak to your doctor about this.

side effects

  • Like all medicines, the preparation can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.
  • The frequency of side effects is based on the following categories:
    • Very common: affects more than 1 in 10 people
    • Common: affects 1 to 10 users in 100
    • Uncommon: affects 1 to 10 users in 1,000
    • Rare: affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000
    • Very rare: affects less than 1 in 10,000 people
    • Not known: frequency cannot be estimated from the available data.
  • possible side effects
    • When taking the preparation, constipation can occur in rare cases. In rare cases, long-term use of the preparation can lead to aluminum deposits, especially in nerve and bone tissue (especially in children), and to phosphate depletion in the body.
  • Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the listed side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects that are not listed.

interactions

  • When taking the preparation with other medicines
    • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using or have recently taken/used other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.
    • The absorption (uptake in the intestines) of tetracyclines and the quinolone derivatives ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and norfloxacin is reduced. The reduction in resorption can be up to 90% and is the result of the formation of non-resorbable aluminum compounds (chelates). The absorption of other drugs can also be reduced, but also increased, which is usually not significant.
    • However, for safety reasons, there should always be a gap of 1 to 2 hours between taking the preparation and taking other medicines.
  • Taking the preparation with food and drink
    • The simultaneous intake of acidic beverages (fruit juices, wine, etc.) increases the unwanted absorption of aluminum in the intestine. Therefore, a gap of 1 to 2 hours should also be observed between taking the preparation and taking the drinks.

Contraindications

  • The preparation must not be taken
    • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of the preparation.
    • in hypophosphatemia (too low phosphate blood levels).
    • in case of constipation.
    • in colon stenosis (narrowing of the large intestine).
    • of infants and children up to the age of three.
    • during pregnancy.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking/using any medicine.
  • pregnancy
    • The preparation must not be taken during pregnancy, as there is no experience with humans and animal experiments with aluminum compounds have shown harmful effects on the offspring.
  • lactation
    • The preparation should not be taken while breastfeeding, as aluminum passes into breast milk.

patient notes

  • Particular caution is required when taking the preparation
    • When using the preparation, regular checks of the aluminum blood level are required. 40 µg/l should not be exceeded.
    • In addition, neurological examinations (including measurement of brain waves) and possibly bone examinations should be carried out at regular intervals (about every six months) in order to detect aluminum poisoning as early as possible.
    • Regular monitoring of the phosphate level should be carried out to adjust the dose.

  • Driving and using machines
    • No studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.
