Before surgery, it is recommended to have your blood electrolyte levels checked.

Method of administration

Precautions to be taken before using or administering the medicinal product

Before using the product, remove the cap from the dispenser on the bottle (Fig. 1).

The tip of the dispenser should be lubricated with Vaseline or liquid paraffin for easier insertion into the rectum (Fig. 2).

If the patient is self-administering the medicinal product, he or she should lie on his or her side (preferably on the left) and bend both legs at the hips and knees (Fig. 3a).

If someone is administering a medicinal product, the patient should assume a position supported on their elbows and knees (Fig. 3b).

The dispenser tip should be carefully inserted into the rectum. Then, slowly squeezing the bottle, empty its contents into the rectum. The patient should try to contract the anal sphincter. The bottle contains excess solution, so it is not necessary to empty it completely. After instilling the solution into the intestine, the patient should remain in one of the described positions for 2-5 minutes until a feeling of urgency occurs, and then defecate. Positioning with the pelvis above head level is most effective. This can be achieved by placing a blanket or pillow under the pelvis.

In cases of anal stenosis or defects in the anal mucosa, the procedure can be performed by extending the rigid tip of the bottle with a soft catheter, such as a Foley catheter. A similar technique should be used for enema through an artificial anus. In this case, the best position is the supine position.

Attention!

Never use force when inserting the tip of the dispenser into the natural or artificial anus, as this may damage the intestinal wall, with serious consequences (bleeding or perforation).

You should also avoid taking enemas while standing. This is uncomfortable and ineffective.

Precautions:

In unconscious patients, patients with impaired consciousness, or those with heart disease, the drug should only be administered in the presence of qualified medical personnel. Special precautions should be taken when administering the drug to patients with renal impairment and patients receiving diuretics or medications that may cause fluid and electrolyte imbalance. In patients with an artificial anus and in patients with primary or secondary electrolyte imbalance, the drug should be used with great caution; monitoring of electrolyte levels is recommended. If bleeding or severe intestinal cramps occur during or after rectal administration, the procedure should be discontinued and a physician consulted. In cases of constipation, use occasionally, exercise particular caution in the elderly, and do not use more than once daily.

Children and youth

If your child does not have a bowel movement, consult your doctor as retention of rectal fluid can cause dehydration.

Driving:

Rectanal has a significant influence on the ability to drive and use machines. Due to the effects of this medicinal product, driving should not be avoided for at least 12 hours after administration.

Overdosage:

No cases of overdose have been reported.

The product is contained in a single-use container, making overdose in adults virtually impossible. However, in patients with absolute contraindications and in particularly sensitive patients, electrolyte disturbances, acidification, and dehydration may occur (see section 4.4). In such cases, electrolyte concentrations should be normalized.

Pregnancy:

Pregnancy

Rectanal is contraindicated for use during pregnancy due to the risk of electrolyte disturbances (see section 4.3).
