Areas of application:
The symptomatic treatment of diseases in which the stomach acid is to be bound: Heartburn and acid-related stomach problems, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer. Chewable tablets in the blister pack. Can be chewed without additional liquid.

Indication / RIOPAN stomach for gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer application

  • The drug contains magaldrate and belongs to the group of drugs called antacids, which are used to neutralize excess stomach acid.
  • The medicine is used:
    • for heartburn and acid-related stomach problems
    • for the symptomatic treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers

  • Always take the medicine exactly as instructed in this leaflet. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • How many tablets should I take each day?
    • Adults and children over 12 years:
      • the normal dose is 1-2 chewable tablets several times a day as needed
      • do not take more than 8 chewable tablets (6400 mg magaldrate) per day

 

  • How long should I take the medicine?
    • The medicine should only be used for the short-term treatment of your symptoms.
    • If the symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks during treatment, a doctor should be consulted.
    • Persistent and / or recurring symptoms could be an indication of a serious illness. Tell your doctor right away if you get any of the following symptoms:
      • You have blood in your stool. This can look black and tarry.
      • You vomit blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds.

 

  • If you take more than you should
    • If you have taken too many tablets, you should seek advice from your doctor. Overdosing can lead to changes in stool behavior such as softening of the stool and an increase in the frequency of stool.

 

  • If you forget to take a dose
    • If you forget to take a dose, simply take your normal dose at the next time you take it.
    • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

 

  • If you stop taking it
    • If, because of side effects, you interrupt treatment with the drug on your own initiative or end it prematurely, you should speak to your doctor.

 

  • If you have any further questions on the use of the medicinal product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The chewable tablets are easy to chew and are then washed down with a little liquid or can also be sucked.

Side effects

  • Like all medicines, it can cause side effects, although not every patient will experience them.
    • Very common (more than 1 in 10 people):
      • loose stools
        Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 people):
    • diarrhea
      • Softening of the bones (only after long-term use of high doses)
    • In the case of kidney failure or long-term use of high doses, the use of the drug can cause an increased aluminum and magnesium content in the blood. Aluminum can be stored in the nerve and bone tissue, in particular, and phosphate can be depleted.
  • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you get seriously affected by any of the side effects listed, or if you notice side effects that are not listed.

  • When taking other drugs:
    • As antacids, like the medicinal product, can impair the absorption of concurrently administered medicinal products, an interval of 2 hours should generally be observed between taking the medicinal product and other medicinal products.
    • Before taking the medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:
      • Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and norfloxacin or another tetracycline or quinolone antibiotic
      • Digoxin (used to treat many heart conditions)
      • Isoniazid (used to treat tuberculosis)
      • Iron compounds
      • Chlorpromazine (used to treat schizophrenia and anxiety)
      • Anticoagulants such as warfarin, which contains coumarin (used to thin the blood)
  • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking / using or have recently taken / used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
  • When taken with food and drink:
    • Simultaneous intake of Riopan gastric tablets and acidic beverages such as fruit juices, wine, etc. as well as effervescent tablets containing fruit acids (e.g. citric acid, tartaric acid) should be avoided.

Contraindications

  • Do not take the medicine:
    • if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to magaldrate or any of the other ingredients.

RIOPAN stomach for gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer pregnancy and breast feeding period

  • The risk-benefit ratio should be carefully considered before taking aluminum-containing drugs to bind excess gastric acid during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, you should only use the medicine (the active substance contains aluminum) for a short time in order to avoid aluminum exposure of your unborn child.
  • Aluminum compounds pass into breast milk. A risk for the newborn is not to be assumed, since only very small amounts are absorbed.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking / using any medicine.

  • Take special care when taking:
    • if you have kidney problems or need dialysis
    • if you have Alzheimer's disease or any other form of dementia
    • if you are on a phosphate diet
    • if your doctor has told you that you have a disordered bones metabolism
    • if you are under 12 years old.
  • Please ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any of the conditions mentioned above.
  • If symptoms persist or recur:
    • If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, you should seek advice from your doctor.
    • Persistent and / or recurring symptoms could be an indication of a serious illness. Tell your doctor right away if you get any of the following symptoms:

  • Driving and using machines:
    • The drug has negligible or no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
