Resveratrol was first isolated and identified in 1963 in knotweed plants (Polygonum cuspidatum). This plant is traditionally used in Japanese and Chinese medicine to treat, for example, fungi, skin inflammation, and diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Resveratrol belongs to the flavonoids and is assigned to the class of phytoalexins, it is water and fat soluble. Phytoalexins are a class of antibiotic polyphenolic compounds that enhance plant defense systems.

Resveratrol is formed in the plant itself as a stress metabolite when there is increased stress, for example due to high ozone formation, UV radiation, insect and fungal infestation, infections and pollutants. Resveratrol also develops its antioxidant effects in humans. Resveratrol particularly supports the cardiovascular system, fat metabolism and strengthens the immune system. SanaTrans resveratrol is vegan.
