• Chlorophyll is a natural pigment that gives plants their green color. Chlorophylls are chelate complexes and consist of a derivatized porphyrin ring and magnesium as the central ion. Depending on the type of chlorophyll, different side chains are attached to the body. For example, chlorophyll a is esterified with phytol. Structurally, the chlorophylls are related to the hemes, which occur as a component of the blood pigment hemoglobin, myoglobin and cytochromes, but contain iron as the central ion, not magnesium.
