EYE DROPS FOR THE TREATMENT OF CORNEAL EDEMA
• Helps to improve the quality of vision
• Draws excess fluid from the cornea with 5% NaCl
• Helps protect the irritated cornea with 0.15% hyaluronic acid
• Free from preservatives
Corneal edema is the accumulation or storage of large amounts of water in the cornea. This increases the thickness of the cornea, causing swelling and opacity. Corneal edema can have many causes. A so-called dystrophy – a disease in which corneal cells are destroyed, which leads to chronic corneal edema – is often the cause. However, injuries or surgical interventions, such as cataract operations, in which the cornea is damaged, can also lead to corneal edema. Patients often experience symptoms such as blurry, blurred vision in the morning, sensitivity to light, seeing halos around light sources, vision loss, watery eyes, and pain.
LUBRICATION SOLUTIONS PROTECT AGAINST DRYNESS AND IRRITATION
One treatment option is so-called hyperosmolar eye drops, such as ODM 5 ® , which draw excess fluid from the cornea through a purely osmotic effect so that the cornea is temporarily hydrated normally again and the quality of vision is improved. ODM 5 ® is the first corneal edema treatment product that is preservative-free and comes in a dropper bottle. It also contains 0.15% hyaluronic acid, which helps protect irritated calluses and promote wound healing.
APPLICATION OF ODM 5 ®
Wash your hands thoroughly before use. Twist off the cap, tilt your head back and place the dropper over the eye to be treated. Using the index finger of one hand, gently pull the lower eyelid down. Place 1-2 drops in the lower conjunctival sac 4 times per day as recommended by your doctor. Do not bring the dropper tip into contact with your eye or touch it with your fingers. Then keep the eye closed for 1-2 minutes. Any remaining drops on the dropper tip can be shaken off with a quick movement of the hand. Put the cap of the bottle back on the bottle after each use. Contact lenses are to be removed prior to treatment as ODM 5 ®is not compatible with it. ODM 5 ® does not need to be rinsed out after use.
SIMPLIFIED PRESENTATION
THE EFFECTIVE PRINCIPLE OF
ODM 5 ®
The active principle of ODM 5 ® is based on so-called osmosis. A difference in concentration between two substances can be compensated for by diffusion through a partially permeable (semipermeable) membrane.
Often the dissolved particles (e.g. salts or sugars) responsible for the difference in concentration are too large to pass through the membrane - so compensation is usually achieved through the outflow of the agent (often water) in which the particles are dissolved . The unpleasant symptoms of corneal edema are caused by the storage of large amounts of water. If you now put 1 - 2 drops of ODM 5 ® on the surface of the eye, part of the water stored in the cornea diffuses into the tear film, which is caused by the addition of ODM 5 ®has a significantly higher concentration of salts (NaCl) than the water in the cornea. So there is a balance through osmotic pressure, the excess water flows out through the tear duct and the cornea is temporarily supplied with moisture again and the quality of vision improves.
FREQUENT QUESTIONS & ANSWERS What is ODM 5 ®
used for ?
ODM 5 ® is recommended to reduce corneal edema: edema caused by corneal dystrophies, for example, as well as post-traumatic or post-surgical edema. Corneal edema is characterized by excess fluid in the cornea. The hyperosmolar solution ODM 5 ® removes this excess fluid from the cornea through a purely osmotic effect, so that the cornea is temporarily supplied with normal moisture again. ODM 5 ® thus contributes to improving the quality of vision. ODM 5 ® contains hyaluronic acid, an ingredient naturally present in the eye and tears, which protects the cornea in the event of irritation.
How do I store ODM 5 ® ?
Please keep ODM 5 ®always out of the reach and sight of children. Store the product at room temperature between 2°C and 25°C. After the expiry date has passed, the medical device may no longer be used. After opening the bottle, the product has a shelf life of 3 months. Damaged dropper bottles must also not be used.
How does corneal edema develop?
There are various causes for the development of corneal edema. Diseases such as so-called dystrophies of the cornea, in which cells are destroyed, can lead to the storage of large amounts of water in the cornea. However, surgical interventions such as cataract operations or injuries or contusions that damage the cornea can also cause corneal edema.
