Vitamin D3

Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble vitamins involved in calcium and bone metabolism, as well as numerous other metabolic processes essential for maintaining a healthy body. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol) are particularly important for humans. Strictly speaking, both are not actually vitamins, but rather precursors of hormones.

Vitamin D can be obtained through food and also produced by the body itself with the help of sunlight. With sufficient sun exposure, the body produces it through the action of UVB rays in the skin. On average, about 80-90% of our vitamin D intake comes from this source. Generally, the body can meet its vitamin D needs through food and regular time spent outdoors. However, a vitamin D deficiency can occur more frequently, especially during the winter months with less sunshine. In such cases, taking additional vitamin D supplements is recommended.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for bones and teeth: To keep them strong, the body needs calcium, which is stored as calcium phosphate. Vitamin D regulates calcium-phosphate metabolism and can thus support the absorption and storage of calcium in the bones. In addition, vitamin D supports the normal function of the immune system and contributes to normal muscle function.

Vitamin D supports:

• the normal function of the immune system
• normal muscle function
• the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth
• cell division
• the normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus

Foods containing vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is therefore primarily found in fatty foods of animal origin. These include some types of fish such as salmon, herring, and mackerel, as well as liver and egg yolks. Some edible mushrooms, such as button mushrooms, porcini, and chanterelles, also contain vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency – symptoms

In its 13th Nutrition Report, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) stated that the overall vitamin D supply of the German population is insufficient. According to their data, approximately one-third of the population is deficient. Severe vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia (softening of the bones) in adults. Typical symptoms include muscle weakness and bone pain. Furthermore, the risk of osteoporosis increases. In children, vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets, a condition characterized by bone deformities.

Furthermore, a vitamin D deficiency is blamed for depressive moods and states of exhaustion, especially during the winter months.

Vitamin D in old age

As we age, not only does our metabolism slow down, but our body's production of vitamin D also declines. Therefore, taking vitamin D supplements is recommended to maintain and support bone health.

Vitamin D daily requirement

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a daily requirement of vitamin D of 20 µg/day in the absence of endogenous synthesis, i.e., in the absence of the body's own production.
