Vitamin K2 promotes bone formation by activating the important neurotransmitter osteocalcin. Osteocalcin contributes significantly to an optimal bone structure and thus strengthens the resilience of the bones. Studies have shown that women with low vitamin K intakes have an increased risk of fractures from osteoporosis. In addition, vitamin K ensures that our blood clots when injured. K2-Köhler ® contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal blood clotting.

What happens with vitamin K2 deficiency?
A lack of vitamin K2 leads to blood clotting disorders. This can lead to dangerous bleeding - not only in wounds, but also internally in a wide variety of organs. In addition, a vitamin K2 deficiency leads to disturbances in bone metabolism. Important for vegans: Vitamin K2 is naturally only found in animal foods such as liver, eggs and dairy products.

Vitamin K2 and arteriosclerosis
Recent studies have shown that an increased intake of vitamin K2 can reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis 1,2,3,4. In arteriosclerosis, calcium crystals are deposited on the vessel walls. This leads to hardening of the arteries. Calcification not only increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, but also of kidney damage, diabetes and accelerated aging. Vitamin K2 activates the protein MGP, which counteracts the formation of calcium crystals in the blood vessels. MGP can bind calcium ions and transport them out of the vessel walls again. In this way, vitamin K2 could not only prevent calcification, but under certain circumstances even reverse it. No other substance is currently known that could take on this task in human metabolism.

What is my daily vitamin K2 requirement?
It is not exactly clear how much vitamin K2 humans need. The German Society for Nutrition (DGE) therefore only gives estimates for an “appropriate intake” of vitamin K overall (K1 and K2). For example, the estimated value for men over the age of 50 is 80 μg per day. Nutritionists have recently been able to show that a higher dosage can also make sense - for example for people whose family has had osteoporosis or cardiovascular disease. You are recommended to take 200 μg of vitamin K2 daily.

How do I take vitamin K2 correctly?
There are different variants of vitamin K2: menaquinone-4, menaquinone-7 and menaquinone-9. Menaquinone-7 is considered the most effective form of vitamin K2, as it is said to have the highest bioavailability. K2 Kohler® contains menaquinone-7.

What side effects does vitamin K2 have?
Vitamin K2 is very well tolerated. Even high doses are safe for healthy people. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has therefore not set an upper limit.
